1. Tidal River Campground – Wilsons Promontory National Park.

Tidal River is just a 3.5-hour drive south-east of Melbourne. It offers a lovely tidal river to one side which is a calm swimming spot, great for families. On the other side, it has a beautiful beach with blue waters, perfect for boogie boarding and even surfing!

With close to 500 camping and caravan sites, this is one of the most popular camping spots in the area. The campground has hot showers, dishwashing stations a pop-up cinema and many gas barbeques! Unpowered sites begin at $29.80.

2. Candlebark Campground – Lake Eildon.

This is one of the best camping spots around the incredible Coller Bay, on the shores of the popular Lake Eildon. Candlebark is the perfect location for families and groups that want to kick back and relax. You can canoe, kayak, paddleboard, or swim in the sheltered waters. There are even walking trails, that you do not want to miss out on. The campground has all the essential amenities- Hot showers, flushing toilets and gas barbecues, campsites start from $24.50.

3. Halls Gap Lakeside Tourist Park- The Grampians.

There are lots to offer at this tourist park- Wi-Fi Hub, Camp Kitchen, Private bathrooms, playground, and trampoline, and even a WOOD-FIRE HEATED POOL!!! This tourist park sits right at the foot of an incredible mountain range. You can camp in a tent, bring a caravan, camper trailer, motorhome or if you are more into glamping you can book one of the luxe safari tents. Lake Bellfield is just nearby where you can kayak and fish, which could be a great activity for friends and families! Campsites start from $31.

4. Neds Gully Campground – Cathedral Range State Park.

Neds Gully campground provides quick and easy access for lovers of bushwalking and mountain hikes. These amazing hikes provide panoramic views of the entire Cathedral Range. The campground has basic facilities, meaning it only offers campers to stay in tents as the grounds are located 50m away from the car park. Perfect location for those who enjoy hiking and enjoy being in nature.

5. Cumberland River Holiday Park – Lorne.

Cumberland River Holiday Park is the ultimate location, right on the edge of the great ocean road. You can swim, snorkel, or surf at the parks very own private beach. The park has lots of different stay options, BYO tent, cedar cabins, and GLAMPING! Each campsite has its own campfire or BBQ just to top it off.

6. Lake Catani -Mount Buffalo

Lake Catani is a picturesque area, which is home to a large variety of walks suitable for all levels. Which lead to many swimming spots on the pristine alpine waters and lots of beautiful picnic spots. The campsite has flushing toilets and hot showers, just what you need after spending a day out on the lake! The campground is open from November to April.

7. Cape Conran – Gippsland.

Cape Conran campgrounds are positioned just 100 metres away from the beach! This location is perfect for those who enjoy nature, it has rich diversity of flora and Fauna and amazing white sandy beaches, rock pools, boardwalks, banksia woodlands and aboriginal history of the coast. For those keen anglers, bring your fishing gear, salmon flathead, and gummy sharks are plentiful, or if you are an experienced diver, reef marine sanctuary hides three shipwrecks.

8. Johanna Beach

Johanna Beach is the backup location for the Rip Curl Pro Surfing Comp, the ideal camping location for those who enjoy surfing! If there is any swell in the Southern Ocean, Johanna will pick it up. It is said that you can get some of the best beach break waves in the world there. The best park is the open grassy space behind the beach is the Great Ocean Road’s top FREE campground.

9. Bright - Free Camping grounds.

Bright has a variety of free camping grounds, for those who are not afraid to live without the essential facilities for a few days! The surrounding water holes and waterfalls are something you do not want to miss out on! Being home to lots of amazing swimming locations all within close distance of each other, Bright is somewhere you must be during summer.

10. Yarrawonga – The Murray River.

Yarrawonga sits right before the NSW and Victorian Border. It offers free camping all along the riverbanks, with sandy beach areas, perfect for those who want to kick back and spend time with friends and family. (not suitable for all cars 4WD suggested) It is first in best dress, and it is a very popular location, so get in quick!
